ByteBlazeI think a great way to implement this would be to add a special type of ladder object we can place anywhere on the first floor, and it would have a basement area that is sized by your castle heart. The object would be limited to 1, and we could have the object anywhere within our base (provided its on the first floor). From within the basement level, we could move the ladder around, but not delete it. The ladder on the first floor would not be able to be destroyed when the basement is filled with objects.

KurbbJust do the same thing as the stairs leading up, have another set that leads down

nerdhuntThis would be amazing, as each castle could have a great basement floorplan despite of location, since each basement could be local to the castle, and avoid the castle tile restrictions. Would be a great addition to fix some less desireable locations.

Prophet MargarineThe default music in the basement should be "All That She Wants" (is another basement) by Ace of Base(ment). A Swedish singing group, mind you, so clearly this was an oversight. https://youtu.be/d73tiBBzvFM?feature=shared

DiswanBasements should be player Made dungeons so there is more interaction between players and castles.

Also being able to create content for other players Will help the Game a lot with player retention.
Which clan Will be able to make the impossible dungeon? -

PingMSIn case it's hard to do it because you can't dig the terrain, maybe in order to build downstairs you give enough material to spawn an area below (pre tiled and walled) that will be fixed size

DAs a castle dwelling aristocrat, prisoners belong in basements.

DavidI've figured out how to fake this by having external stairs and the entry hall on the "second" floor, but that wastes preciously limited vertical space and makes it hard for the servants quarters to have direct access to the gardens

AlexHere is a thought.
You can't place Heart on the top floor, but you can relocate it to the basement.
However, it would cause an overhaul of the map, because at the moment we run into ruined Hearts all over. If we add a basement, will there be some loot to find where the castles used to be? -

Francois MorinIf it is not too much of a programming nightmare or incompatible with the camera view, this would be so great. Even if it has a tile limit. We could then build a creepy area like a dungeon or a blood cellar like wine cellars.

Yeah, what castle has some sort of dungeon-ous underground floor, for cool storage of food, or for unsightly prisoners, who would want that.
Also definitely never been constructed before in real life, so they can't figure out the implementation I guess.
So anyway, yeah +1, why isn't this in the game yet, I was disappointed when I came back to try 1.0 and it STILL wasn't in. -

Mr. BeefyBasements could be as simple as reversing the terrain in areas instead of having the second level rise, make it fall in the rear. Most of these will have to be on the edge of the map of course to prevent unfair disadvantages. There are several that back up to water sources that would prevent raiding.

nmfStairs/ladder down needs to be from the ground floor, not the first floor.

MetalmouraYeah i agree, a Basement level is a must have feature even if it can only go one level down i would be thankful. it should be constrained to the boarders of the plot though other wise i think this could be abused. My friends and I also had the idea of a sewer pipe fast travel that would allow you to travel between your castle basements via Rat form.

SwayAwayI mean, I circumvent this by adding 2 flight of stairs at the entrance and then build 1 stairs somewhere leading down, with your castle built above it, but unfortunately, you can't build stairs at the entrance and another right after it, as it needs a connected floor, so you have to leave a space before the second set of stairs, but you could always add a couple of statues, as a way to decorate it so it "hides" the space between stairs
