Revamp the research system into something more straightforward and less RNG heavy

Randomly researching stuff is not fun. It wasn't in Rust (which is why they changed it) and it isn't here either.

You may say: "But tech trees are done to death!" and you would be correct.
But sometimes ideas are being overused because they actually work.

Tech trees are a true and tested mechanic that allows the player to progress without feeling cheated by the random whims of a cruel god.

It gives control to the player. Which is how progression should be. Not something that the player has no influence over but rather something that is only dependent how the player wishes to advance.

My suggestion:
Introduce a tech tree system where the player decides what they want to research. Because it doesn't make sense to just "research" something at random. You would at least have to have a general direction you want to take like "Weapons" or "Infrastructure". You could still keep the books as a way to research stuff ahead of time and use paper for regular research.
